NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Minto Eye Hospital (Regional Institute of Ophthalmology), Bengaluru
The ophthalmic wing of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI).
STIPEND
- Monthly Remuneration: Approximately ₹75,000
- Note: This is among the highest stipends for government fellowships in India. Fellows are on a general duty rotation (approx. 1–2 times per month), which may include managing emergency ocular trauma (e.g., corneal tears).
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Accreditation: This is an RGUHS-affiliated program. Admission requires clearing a university-level MCQ entrance exam (typically announced in August) followed by an interview. A formal exit exam (theory and practical) is mandatory.
- Clinical Mastery: The OPD exposure is unparalleled, described by past fellows as “textbook cases coming to life.” It builds immense confidence in the medical management of complex and end-stage glaucoma.
- Surgical Hands-on:
- Techniques: Primarily focuses on SICS Trabeculectomy and combined Phaco-Trabeculectomy.
- Timeline: Hands-on can begin as early as the first month based on prior competency. Most fellows achieve independence in SICS-Trab by the 6–7 month mark.
- Volume: Typically 2 OT days per week. Expect to perform 1–2 SICS-based cases weekly, though turns are shared among fellows.
- Lasers & Diagnostics: Extensive hands-on for Peripheral Iridotomy (PI) and occasional Hyaloidotomy. Note: Equipment for SLT/ALT and advanced MIGS/Tubes is currently limited or used primarily for observation.
- Academics: Primarily self-driven. Learning happens through chair-side discussions in the clinic and presenting cases to senior consultants.
- Work-Life Balance: Excellent. The government setup ensures a stable 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM routine with ample time for self-study, making it ideal for those preparing for further competitive exams or research.
PERSONAL OPINION
Minto is a premier choice for those who value clinical depth and diagnostic authority. You will graduate as a highly competent medical glaucoma specialist and a confident Trab surgeon. While it lacks high-volume Phaco and the latest MIGS technology, the brand value of BMCRI and the high stipend make it one of the most sought-after government fellowships in South India.
