- Financial Policy: Standard private practice stipend for short-term observerships/fellowships.
DURATION
6 Months (Intake: One fellow every 3 months)
HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Induction: Admission is based on a personal interview. The program is designed as a high-intensity clinical rotation rather than a surgical track.
- Clinical Workflow: The day typically starts between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. Fellows are rotated between two different Retina consultants daily (one in the morning and one in the afternoon), providing exposure to diverse practice styles.
- Procedural Hands-on: Training is primarily focused on Medical Retina interventions.
- Intravitreal Injections: Hands-on experience begins in the second month. Fellows typically perform 20–25 injections over the final four months of the tenure.
- Retinal Lasers: Laser postings are concentrated in the final two months (once weekly). During these eight dedicated sessions, fellows perform various procedures including PRP, barrage, and sectoral lasers (approx. 5 cases per session).
- Charity Clinic Rotations: Hands-on procedures are performed during twice-weekly postings (Wednesdays and Fridays) at two different charity clinics. Fellows are responsible for managing the OPD and identifying candidates for lasers and injections.
- Diagnostic & OT Exposure: While the primary focus is OPD management and diagnostics, interested fellows are permitted to observe vitreoretinal surgeries in the OT. Indirect Ophthalmoscopy (LIO) training is not standard but can be requested.
- Limitations: ROP exposure is minimal, and Uveitis cases are managed by a separate dedicated department, resulting in zero specialty exposure for retina fellows.
- Academics & Culture: Features weekly classes with mandatory presentations (1–2 per term). The department maintains a professional, “chill” atmosphere with highly approachable consultants.
PERSONAL OPINION
This program is an excellent “Finishing School” for post-graduates who had limited retina exposure during their residency and want to gain confidence in diagnostics, lasers, and injections. It provides a solid foundation in medical retina within a prestigious private setup. However, it is not recommended for candidates who are already proficient in these procedures and are seeking high-volume surgical “cutting” or purely numerical case counts.
