Training Structure & Clinical Exposure

First 6 months: General Ophthalmology for all fellows.

IOL fellows continue in General Ophthalmology for the rest of the fellowship.

Fellows evaluate patients in OPD and refer cases to specialty departments; independent case management is not permitted.
Surgical Training

SICS training starts from the 3rd month in General Ophthalmology.

OT exposure is limited in the first 6 months but improves thereafter.

Good exposure to advanced cataract cases and complication management (e.g., anterior vitrectomy, iris claw IOL).
Phaco Training

Begins only in the last 6 months.

Approximately 1 phaco case per week (~30 cases total).

No advanced phaco cases provided.

No topical phaco experience.
Work Environment

Working hours: 9 AM – 6 PM (may extend beyond 6 PM).

Department is somewhat hectic.

No peripheral postings.
Duties

No night duties in the first 6 months.

After 6 months: ~1 night duty/month.

Sunday duty: ~1 per month.
Overall Outcome
You graduate as a competent SICS surgeon with good exposure to complication management. However, phaco experience is limited and may require additional hands-on training after the fellowship. Some fellows opt for paid short-term phaco training at the same institute to improve their skills.
