HONEST REVIEW
- Training Methodology (The 15-Day Rule):
- Phase 1 (Initial 15 Days): High-level supervision. A dedicated trainer stands by the trainee for every case to ensure safety and provide real-time feedback.
- Phase 2 (Final 15 Days): Transition to surgical independence. Once the trainers are confident in your dexterity, you perform cases independently while they remain available in the same OT complex for immediate assistance if a complication arises.
- Surgical Volume: Fellows can expect to perform roughly 25–30 SICS cases during the month.
- Mentorship: Faculty members are described as very approachable and patient. The program is specifically praised for helping new surgeons overcome “OT Phobia” by providing a safe, structured environment.
- Clinical Focus: The training is purely surgical (SICS), focusing on constructing the tunnel, capsulotomy, and nucleus delivery techniques.
- Work Culture: * Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Training typically happens during these hours).
- Atmosphere: Supportive and structured; geared toward rapid skill enhancement.
PERSONAL OPINION
HV Desai is widely considered one of the best SICS training platforms in Western India. Because it is a high-volume charitable center (performing ~38,000 surgeries annually), the diversity of cataracts—including mature and “rock hard” lenses—is immense. If you are a fresh MS/DNB graduate or an ophthalmologist who hasn’t operated in years, this 1-month “re-entry” program is elite. You don’t just get numbers; you get a structured progression that builds genuine confidence.
