NAME OF THE INSTITUTE
Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
(A quaternary care center within the Aravind Eye Care System, specifically noted for a more diverse Oculoplasty surgical transition compared to other branches.)
STIPEND & ACCOMMODATION
- Stipend: Standardized Aravind scale (₹40k Year 1 / ₹50k Year 2 for 2026).
- Accommodation: Hospital provides a hostel (described as dated and cramped). Many fellows opt for nearby private apartments, though rents are higher.
- Pro-Tip: The water in the area is very hard; many fellows report hair loss or skin issues. Budgeting for a water softener or bottled water for hair care is a common local “survival” hack.
DURATION
18 Months (1.5 Years)
- Rotation: 4 Months General Ophthalmology + 14 Months Oculoplasty Department.
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (Oculoplasty):
- Progression: OT starts from the 3rd month of the specialty posting.
- Scope: You start with DCR (Dacryocystorhinostomy) and progress to Lid and Orbit procedures.
- Coimbatore vs. Madurai: Reviewers explicitly state that Coimbatore offers a better surgical variety (Lid/Orbit) than Madurai, which can be overly DCR-heavy.
- Oncology Gap: There is no exposure to Ocular Oncology at this branch. Fellows receive a dedicated 1-week posting at Aravind Madurai at the end of their tenure to cover this.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- Technique: SICS only. There is no Phacoemulsification training in this track.
- Volume: You get 1 cataract OT per week. Expect to complete 100–200 SICS by the end of the 18 months.
- Outreach & Camps:
- Frequency: 2–3 weekends per month.
- Travel: Includes long-distance camps to Kerala (Munnar, Kodungallur) and Karnataka (Hosur). While exhausting, the scenic locations like Ooty/Munnar are considered a perk.
- Work Culture & Timings:
- Hours: 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM (Relentless patient load).
- Breaks: Two 15-minute tea breaks and 1 hour for lunch, though these are often cut by the OPD head sister during high-volume days.
- Night Duty: Rare (once every 1–2 months) as it is shared among a large pool of DNBs and fellows.
- Academics: Primarily self-learning. There are no dedicated classes for fellows, only for DNB residents. You will be expected to teach the nursing staff and can only attend conferences if you are presenting research.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Coimbatore Oculoplasty is a “Clinical Volume Powerhouse.” It is ideal for someone who wants to see an astronomical number of patients and master the bread-and-butter of Oculoplasty (DCR and Lid repairs). While it may lack the “absolute latest” ultra-niche procedures found in corporate boutiques, the sheer diagnostic “gut feeling” you develop here is unmatched. It is a rugged, high-intensity program that rewards those who are proactive and self-motivated in their studies.
