HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Hands-on (Strabismus):
- Progression: Specialty OT begins in the 6th month. Training is modular; you start with single-muscle steps (recessions/resections).
- Volume: Fellows typically operate on 50–60 muscles during their tenure. Skilled fellows who pick up the technique early are given more independent cases.
- Advanced Procedures: While you observe Botox injections for squints and complex congenital surgeries, hands-on is generally restricted to standard horizontal muscle corrections.
- Surgical Hands-on (Cataract):
- Paediatric Cataract: Allotted numbers are relatively low, averaging 15–20 cases per fellow.
- Technique: You are taught to use the I&A (Irrigation & Aspiration) probe of the phaco machine for soft pediatric cataracts, but Phacoemulsification training is not included in this specialty track.
- Clinical Exposure:
- Intensity: Extremely Hectic. Work starts at 7:30 AM and frequently runs until 6:00 PM.
- Gap: Unlike Aravind Madurai, there is no dedicated Neuro-Ophthalmology posting here. Additionally, NLD (Nasolacrimal Duct) probings are managed by the Orbit/Oculoplasty department, not the Paediatric team.
- Specialty Rotations (The Final Month):
- The last month is split: 15 days of ROP (observation only, shadowing VR consultants) and 15 days of Orbit (primarily to observe NLD probings).
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Calls: 1 Evening duty (6:00–7:30 PM), 1 Night duty, and 2 Outreach camps per month.
- Environment: Professional and high-pressure due to the massive patient load.
PERSONAL OPINION
Aravind Coimbatore is a “Clinical Muscle-Memory Hub.” It is an excellent program for mastering the bread-and-butter of Strabismus and getting comfortable with pediatric OPD workups. While it lacks the Neuro-Ophthal and NLD surgical exposure found in Madurai, the sheer volume of “standard” squints you see will make you very proficient in sensory-motor exams. It is best suited for someone who wants a solid 18-month foundation before potentially seeking a Senior Residency to refine their pediatric phaco skills.
