HONEST REVIEW
- Selection: Selection is merit-based via a written MCQ exam and an interview. The hospital typically inducts two fellows every 6 months.
- Year 1 (Medical Retina Focus): The first year is strictly dedicated to medical retina. You will become an expert in diagnostics (B-scan, FFA, OCT, OCT-A) and minor procedures. Retinal lasers and intravitreal injections usually commence after the first month.
- Year 2 (Surgical Training): Surgical “steps” are introduced in the second year.
- Early Phase: Steps in simple vitrectomies, scleral buckling, and vitreous hemorrhage management.
- Advanced Phase: Progressive involvement in complex cases (TRDs, giant retinal tears) and macular surgeries (including ILM peeling).
- Independence: Like most premium private fellowships, independent “start-to-finish” surgeries on private patients are rare; the focus is on mastering specific surgical segments under high-end visualization.
- Specialty Exposure:
- ROP: Exposure is noted to be minimal compared to dedicated pediatric centers due to a lower neonatal patient load.
- Cataract: There is no Phacoemulsification or general cataract training included in the VR track.
- Clinical Breadth: Excellent. You will see a high volume of diabetic retinopathy, vascular occlusions, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
- Work Culture & Duties:
- Hours: Typically 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
- Duties: Night calls once a week and Sunday duties once every alternate month.
- Environment: Professionally demanding but supportive.
- Academics & Research: Strong emphasis on academic growth. Fellows are encouraged to utilize the 24×7 Retina Wet Lab (equipped with model eyes and microscopes) and are given opportunities to present research at national and international conferences.
PERSONAL OPINION
Nethradhama’s VR fellowship is a “Technology & Diagnostics” powerhouse. It is ideal for candidates who want to master the medical and diagnostic side of retina using the world’s latest equipment. While you may not graduate as a high-volume independent “buckle-and-vitrectomy” surgeon, your clinical acumen and familiarity with advanced surgical technology will be elite. It is a prestigious brand to have on your CV, especially for future corporate or academic practice.
