24 Months (2 Years)
HONEST REVIEW
- Surgical Progression: The training is divided between the main super-specialty center (observation/steps) and their trust/charity hospital (hands-on).
- Months 1–5: Focused on SICS to establish baseline manual proficiency.
- Months 6–18: Phacoemulsification training begins. It follows a modular approach: Bimanual I&A → Tunnel construction → Full Phaco.
- Months 18–24: Transition to Topical Phaco for senior fellows.
- Surgical Volume: Fellows typically complete between 150 – 250 independent cases over the two-year period.
- Refractive Exposure: This is a strong point of the program. Fellows gain significant exposure to high-end refractive procedures including LASIK, PRK, SMILE, and C3R. While hands-on for SMILE may be limited, the diagnostic workup and observation of advanced laser platforms are top-tier.
- Technology & Lenses: You will be exposed to the latest premium IOLs (Multifocal, EDOF, Toric) and advanced surgical platforms (like FLACS), though hands-on with these premium cases is usually reserved for senior consultants.
- Research & Academics: The institute is heavily research-driven. Fellows are expected to manage a high volume of data collation and clinical studies. This results in excellent opportunities to present at major national (AIOC) and international conferences (ASCRS/ESCRS).
- Limitations: The program is criticized by some for its lack of formal training in managing “nightmare” scenarios like Posterior Capsular Ruptures (PCR), SFIOL, or advanced anterior vitrectomy.
PERSONAL OPINION
Nethradhama is a “Corporate-Academic” hybrid. It is best suited for fellows who want to master the premium side of ophthalmology and build a strong research portfolio. The institutional brand and exposure to the latest technology are unparalleled. However, the high financial penalties for complications and the rigid exit bond create a high-pressure environment that requires a steady hand and a long-term commitment.
