HONEST REVIEW
- Selection & Intake: Inducts one fellow per admission cycle (roughly every 1.5 to 2 years) via a personal interview. The program is highly prestigious and focuses on producing independent sub-specialists.
- Surgical Progression:
- Phase 1 (Early Months): Training starts with fundamental procedures such as DCR, dacryocystectomy, probing, and lid repairs by the second month.
- Advanced Training: Progression to ptosis correction, entropion/ectropion repair, evisceration, and enucleation. The program provides exposure to both horizontal and vertical muscle lid surgeries.
- Autonomy: Fellows transition to independent cases based on demonstrated surgical proficiency.
- Specialty Rotations:
- Ocular Oncology: In the final six months, fellows typically spend one day a week at NN-2 (Narayana Health City campus) for concentrated oncology exposure.
- Aesthetics: Narayana Nethralaya has a dedicated “Aesthetics Studio.” Exposure to cosmetic procedures (Botox, fillers, blepharoplasty) is provided at NN-1 or via rotations to NN-4 (Bommasandra).
- Clinical Breadth: Excellent OPD exposure. Being a tertiary referral center, you encounter complex orbital conditions and rare pathologies not seen in general practice.
- Work Culture & Academics:
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The environment is described as professional, non-toxic, and academically stimulating.
- Structure: Regular seminars, journal clubs, and case-based discussions are conducted, often via video-conferencing across all NN centers.
- On-Call Duties: Includes one 24-hour duty and one Sunday duty per month. There are no outreach camp duties or long-distance peripheral postings.
PERSONAL OPINION
The NN Oculoplasty fellowship is one of the most refined programs in the country for those interested in Oculofacial Aesthetics and Reconstructive surgery. The institutional focus on research and high-end aesthetics gives graduates a significant edge in urban private practice. While the oncology volume may be lower than at dedicated cancer centers, the comprehensive lid and lacrimal training is top-tier.
